if you take out an 8 pin tube, you’ll have to put back an 8 pin tube? what about in the case of a 300B, it only has 4 pins. would you need to find an amp that has 4 pins only?

I’m trying to find ‘cheaper’ brands for my power amp tube for my darkvoice 336 headphone amp, and i dont know what to put in it besides two that people have mentioned, the western 421A and tung sol 5998. other than that..what else can go in there?

look around. all tubes will sound different. find one that sounds the best

true, but that would be a lot of hours of continuous usage at extremely high volumes.

Exactly Audiophile. Kills the life of the tube.

JJ’s go for 17 each

NO! DON’T TOUCH the tubes with your bare hands! Use a glove! Your body oils can cause the tube to overheat due to uneven and/or insulated heat!

Chipstastegood said in April 8th, 2010 at 10:47 pm

yeah i guess 12 dollars relative to 2000 does’n't seem like much but 12$ multiplied by x many pre amps is still a lot..

Unless it’s a Marshall, they have about 7 tubes but still, they are like $2000 for a head alone.

mygif
ItzAmazingBrian said in April 12th, 2010 at 1:51 pm

It’s not that much being that there isn’t much more than 4 tubes on each amp or amp head. Those amps are going for $1000+ dollars.

Chipstastegood said in April 13th, 2010 at 1:44 pm

12 bucks a tube? idk about that….

mygif
ItzAmazingBrian said in April 15th, 2010 at 7:57 pm

How come tube amps are so expensive when tubes are cheap?

mygif
J3sst44 said in April 18th, 2010 at 6:00 pm

It’s not hard, not worth paying for the technician, just unscrew the grille on the back, take out the old tube, and reinsert the new one. Not like taking a TV apart or something.
